How did you get started?
It started in January 2010 with a couple of the guys getting together just to mess around and play music. After a couple practices, some songs started to come together. Scott was found from an ad on the internet. After a few more practices, they decided he was a good fit. Our Last Crusade was born.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Scott - Musically I get my inspiration from a lot of different bands. I have a bunch of bands that I am really influenced by and that I try to model myself after musically. I try to take bits and pieces out of the music I like, add our own touch and then put it back together for what I hope, is something awesome.
Brady - Life. Life Experiences. Other bands have influenced my playing, but I want my music as a whole to be a cathartic experience
Tony - I get my inspiration from my friends, family and my girlfriend.
Matt - I get my inspiration from a lot of artists, especially David Darocha form Born of Osiris. Being the skilled bassist in the successful band that he is in makes me want to push myself as a bassist to the next level. I've also chilled out with him and the band a handful of times. He is also a very chill dude. How could you not be inspired by them?
What has been your favorite venue so far? And what's your dream venue?
Scott - I would say the best venue we have played so far would be The Den at the University of Calgary. It was our first show as a band and there were tons of people there and it was just a really great show. As for a dream venue, I don’t think we really have one in particular. We just want to play venues that are filled with people that are stoked about our music.
Brady - My favorite venue was the Den at the U of C, mainly because of the massive turnout, the venue itself was cramped and awkward. My dream is to play mainstage on Warped tour, or one of those huge huge stages that I see on YouTube from wacken and download... all those huge UK-fests
Tony - My dream venue is anywhere there are people who enjoy our music and are having a good time.
Matt - The best venue that we have played so far would be The Den in the University of Calgary. Our dream venue is a venue that has a lot of people. It doesn't matter what the venue is, as long as people are there. My dream venue coming up is at Avenue Theatre in Edmonton. We are playing there in two weeks and super excited. Bands such as Asking Alexandria, Emmure, and Miss May I will be playing shows at this stage in the near future as well. We are excited to see what Edmonton has to offer.
If you had a chance to interview a musician who would it be, and why?
Scott - Dallas Green. He is a super talented musician that expresses himself perfectly in all of his lyrics. I can connect to any of his songs.
Brady - Jesse Lacey. His songs are the soundtrack to my life. everything he's done is perfect
Tony - Mike Portnoy. His instructional DVDs are what taught me how to play the drums. To this day I hunt for more of his teaching videos.
Matt - I would choose to interview Katy Perry and or Ke$ha <3.
If you could thank somebody for helping you fulfill your dreams as a musician,
who would it be? And why?
Scott - It would have to be my parents. They have always been really supportive of my music. When I was younger they would always drive me to band practice or to shows. Even though its not really their type of music they still listen to the songs and come out to shows.
Brady - The dudes from my hockey team from back in the day. They showed me good music, they taught me that playing an instrument is more than just a hobby that misfits who don't play sports do. They pushed me off the cliff and i hit the ground running
Tony - I would have to thank my parents and my highschool music teacher Mr. Goodwin. My parents put up with the loud guitar and drums for all of those years, paid for my guitar lessons since I was a kid and drove me to band practice all of the time. Mr. Goodwin's his passion for music spread to me and made me the musician I am today.
Matt - I would thank other musicians who have given me advice and helped me along the way. I would also thank my parents as they have been supportive of my music.
If you weren't involved in music, what would you be doing in life right now?
Scott - 3/4 of us are going to University right now. So I’m guessing we would probably just be doing that. Or working. Either or.
Brady - I would most likely be a student.. but i would have a way higher GPA
Tony - I'm currently working on an Electrician Apprenticeship so I would just be working.
Matt - I would probably end up playing University Basketball and Volleyball.
If mom was going to make your favorite home-cooked meal, what would it be?
Scott - For me I would have to say Spaghetti is a favorite when I am home.
Brady - She would have to make some disgusting mix of chicken wings, mashed potatoes, tacos, fried rice, and pho
Tony - Her homemade pasta dinner. I love that sauce.
Matt -
What do you do in your down time?
Scott - I am a big hockey fan so I watch a lot of hockey. I also like to play Xbox. Other then that I spend a lot of time just checking out new bands and hanging out with friends.
Brady - I follow hockey like a religion, and I love the outdoor rink. I game xbox pretty often. (add me on live!!! BSn1pes). I also like to work out and take my dog on walks, party hard with my bros.. pretty much just your typical stuff
Tony - Play guitar, Play drums and Hang out with my girlfriend.
Matt - Listen to music, have some brews, hang out with friends and have a good time.
Have you had any really embarrassing mishaps on stage?
Scott - Personally, not much has happened to me. I have had a couple times when I will be swinging the mic and it will fly off the cord. But other then that nothing to embarrassing.
Brady - I wore a pretty tight pair of jean shorts and i ripped a massive, massive hole in them, 10 seconds into the set.
Tony - Other than dropping my sticks and almost tipping over on my drum stool, no.
Matt - I have had my cable unplug from my bass while I was playing on stage for a decent amount of time. I have also used someone else's bass rig one time that stopped working entirely. As a result, I now own a wireless system and put some money to an amazing bass rig.
What positive message do you want to send through your music to your fans?
Scott - We just want people to get really stoked off our music and have a good time at our shows. First and foremost we are trying to make music that is super good and that you want to come out and see. Lyrically I like to tell a story with the songs that I write. I want to have people understand what I am trying to say when they are done listening.
Brady - I want people to be able to relate to the music.. i want people in like 10-15 years from now to be saying how an album by Our Last Crusade changed their lives. I want people to hear our tunes and feel uplifted, to just feel inexplicably happy when they hear us. sonic opium.
Tony - No message really, I just hope people enjoy it.
Matt - We just want people to get really stoked off our music and have a good time at our shows. First and foremost, we are trying to make music that is good and that people want to come out and see. Lyrically, we want to tell a story with the songs we write. I want to have people understand and relate to what is said through the lyrics.
And lastly, what does your band name mean to you? And, whats its origin?
Our Last Crusade, for us, signifies that this is the band that is going somewhere. We have all been in quite a few bands and this is the one that we have the most confidence in. We love the chemistry, work ethic, passion and dedication that we all put in. To me it just seems like we are doing a lot of the right things and we have the talent to take this band as far as we want. It just comes down to a lot of hard work and determination and wanting it more then you want anything else. For us, music is our crusade.
Our Last Crusade is:
Scott Wilson - Vocals
Brady Schmidt - Guitar
Matt Danko - Bass
Tony Salvati - Drums
