INTERVIEW: Eloi Eloi

GENRE: Christian/Hardcore/Metalcore
HOMETOWN: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
RECORD LABEL: Unsigned
BIOWe are a group of friends who love Jesus and seek him daily. We are not here to make money or become well known. We want nothing more than to share the love of Jesus Christ with you, wether it be at a show or if our paths happen to cross on the sidewalk. We have been called to use the gifts God has given us to reach out to the darkened music scene we all grew up as a part of. Our name comes from the gospel of Mark. Jesus, the son of the creator of existence, humbled himself to the role of a servant to bring eternal life to man and was mocked, mercilessly beaten, and hung from a tree with nails by the very people he came to save. In his last words he quoted Psalm 22, which foretells of the coming of the messiah . Mark 15:34 says this, "And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?"-which means "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Our name is a constant reminder of the sacrifice given for us, that no suffering is too great to bear for the kingdom, and that our music will always be worship in God's name, unceasingly crying out "My God, My God."

We are Eloi Eloi. We worship God. And here's what it sounds like.

(interview questions answered by Chase Stafford)

How did you guys get started?
well, Eloi Eloi was first started by Eddie, Blake, laker and our former guitarist Vincent. We got a set together and we were contacted by Chase through Blake about being the second guitarist. He came and tried out and was a great fit. God was calling Vincent elsewhere, so we parted ways. We played several shows as a four piece and God brought Michael to us and from the very first practice with him, we know he was a perfect fit for us. We were all brought into this band when we were at some of the lowest points in our lives and we desperately wanted God to use us, in doing what we love.
Can you describe Eloi Eloi's sound?
haha well probably the best way to describe our sound is a very melodic, metalcore sound. we love experimenting with melodies. We try our best to make out music as tasteful and catchy as we can, but also keep it very heavy.
Are there any bands/musicians that have inspired your music?
well honestly, our biggest influences lately have been Misery Signals, The Ghost Inside, Oceana and Structures. All of these bands bring thier own style into their genre, and are some incredible bands.

Do you have a favorite song to play at shows?
thats really tough because that differs for all of us i think. but probably our song "Bellow". it was the first song ever written after Chase joined the band, and was the first song we ever released. the song is about how broken and plagued with sin we are, and how we see the need for Christ in our lives and our struggle to walk with him. when we play, the meaning of this song really hits home and our passion in what we do, and why we do it, i feel is best portrayed when playing this song.

What has been your favorite band to tour with so far?
to date we have been on one tour but probably our friends in Challanger. we met these guys at a last minute show in tulsa last february and we all just became awesome friends. so to be able to tour with them was awesome.

If you could go on tour with any band, who would it be, and why?
I speak for everyone in the band when I say that if we could tour with either Misery Signals or The Ghost Inside, we would be beyond thrilled! these bands have inspired us so much, and they set themselves apart by the way they write their music and we really try to do the same.
What has been the most interesting tour so far?

haha definitely our tour with Challanger, Kublai Khan and End Ocean. awesome, awesome dudes.

What is the craziest thing that has happened at one of your shows?

Well we played in Durant, Oklahoma with for us is like a second home town, and our friend Tynan stage dove onto a bunch of girls managing to knock like 10 people down in the process during the intro to our set. it was definitely a sign that the show was going to be nuts, and it was!

What has been your favorite venue so far?

We have 2 places we really call home on the road, and for us to pick out of the two, it would kinda suck. so the enerje even center in Owasso, Oklahoma is definitely one of our favorites. the owner, Eric Hamm is one of the easiest going guys we have worked with, and the staff there is incredible. but also the SOSU ballroom in Durant, Oklahoma is up there too because the entire scene there is awesome. its like one big family there and its just a chance to play for a lot of familiar faces and every time, it is a blast.

How exactly do you pronounce Eloi Eloi?
And how did you guys come up with that name for your band?
there's no real way to pronounce it because it is Hebrew. but we say it eh-loy eh-loy. we got it from when Jesus was on the cross. in mark 15:34 it says that Jesus cried out from the cross "Eloi Eloi, lema sabachthani?" which means, "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?" which Jesus is quoting psalm 22. Our name is a constant reminder to us of the sacrifice given for us, and that no suffering is too great to bear for the kingdom of God, and that our music will always be worship, always crying out "My God, My God".

Any closing words?
we hope than anyone reading this will check us out, and come talk to us at a show! we love meeting new people and getting to know everone we meet at shows. so if we are in your city or near it, come hang with us before or after a show, because we are always there early and up to something!
